Eva Tristan Torres is the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.  Torres was an honor graduate of Sabinal High School in Sabinal, Texas. She was one of the top 10 graduates from Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde, Texas in 1975, and graduated with highest honors from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1977.  She earned a Masters of Education degree from Pan American University in 1979, a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership in 1999, and is currently working on her Doctorate in Education Degree at the University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley.

Torres, who has been with the Edinburg CISD since 1977, served as a PE teacher/coach at Edinburg High School, an English Teacher/UIL Coach at Edinburg North High School, as the ENHS Dean of Instruction, and, in 2007, as the principal for Francisco Barrientes Middle School prior to being named principal of Robert Vela High School in December 2012.

Torres has extensive experience in instructional programs, initiatives and activities, state-mandated curriculum standards, federal programs, campus-wide testing, and advanced placement programs. She was part of the original staff to open Edinburg North High School in 1991 and, based on her students’ AP English Literature scores, was chosen by then-Texas Governor George W. Bush in 1998 for a visit to her classroom so that he could observe her lesson. Gov. Bush had come to Edinburg North to announce statewide Advanced Placement initiatives.

While serving as Dean of Instruction at ENHS, Torres served on numerous College Board and TEA committees at the regional and national level and as a consultant to the College Board Southwestern Region. She was one of two educators who was featured at the Advanced Placement 2005 “College Board’s Report to the Nation” Press Conference in Washington, D.C. and was awarded the College Board’s Southwestern Region “You Make a Difference” Leadership Award for “exemplary contributions and achievements in professional activities” in helping students connect to college success.

She has the unique experience of having opened two new campuses at ECISD, first as principal at Barrientes Middle School, and most recently as principal of Robert Vela High. She was chosen TCTA’s Secondary Administrator of the Year in 2008. In 2010, she was selected as the Region I Outstanding Middle School Principal of the Year by the Texas Association of Secondary Principals (TASSP), and received the Texas Music Educator’s Outstanding Administrator Award in 2012.

Mrs. Torres is the daughter of the late Rodolfo and Virginia Tristan of Sabinal. She is married to Jesus M. Torres, and they have two daughters, Jennifer Elizabeth and Virginia Isaura.
