UPDATED MARCH 10, 2020

I want to reassure you that we are continuing to work closely with the Hidalgo County Health Department, Texas Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to monitor the developing situation regarding Coronavirus (COVID- 19) in order to maintain a safe and healthy environment for students and staff in Edinburg CISD. As of today, there are no confirmed cases in Edinburg CISD or Hidalgo County.

State medical experts indicate that the best ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19 are the same recommendations for preventing the spread of the flu, such as avoiding close contact with those who are sick, regular and proper hand-washing, covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue, and staying home when sick.

In addition to standard cleaning routines, all campus and district facilities and buses will be more deeply disinfected over spring break.

If staff, students, or immediate family members travel to China, Iran, Italy, South Korea, Japan, or any additional countries added to the CDC Level 2 and 3 list over spring break, please inform your school principal and self-quarantine for 14 days before returning to work or school. Staff members who self-quarantine will need to follow normal absence-reporting procedures.

I will keep you informed as we receive additional information. It takes all of us working together to ensure healthy learning environments. I hope everyone has a restful and safe spring break.

ESPANOL:

POSTED MARCH 2, 2020

The Edinburg CISD is working proactively to keep our students, families, staff, and school community safe. Our school district is in frequent communication with the Hidalgo County Health Department, the Texas Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and is receiving the most updated information on the COVID 19 (coronavirus). At this time, there are no confirmed or suspected cases in Edinburg CISD or Hidalgo County.

While the Hidalgo County Health Department has assured us that we are at low risk, we should continue to emphasize the basic behaviors to minimize virus infections. Edinburg CISD has intensified cleaning and sanitization in the classrooms at all school facilities, including buses.

Our teachers, nurses, and other staff are continuing to emphasize the practice of proper hygiene including handwashing, covering your cough, and cleaning classroom and cafeteria tables frequently. Important points for students and parents to remember:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not accessible.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with your hands.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with the inside of your elbow when sneezing and coughing.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects.
  • Keep your child at home if he/she has a fever over 100°F / 37.8°C, or until they no longer have fever symptoms for at least 24 hours.
  • Health officials are recommending that if you have not had your flu vaccine this year, that you get one now.

Updated information from the Center for Disease Control on COVID 19 (coronavirus) in the United States can be found at www.cdc.gov/coronavirus 2019. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact your school nurse.
