ECISD Alumni Spotlight: Steven Escobar
From Edinburg High School to Primetime Emmy Award Winner.
Steven Escobar never forgot where his journey began.
A 1987 graduate of Edinburg High School, Escobar discovered his interest in television and film through ECISD’s Radio & TV program. Today, he is an independent filmmaker, producer, screenwriter, television editor, and television professional working in Los Angeles, California.
His career has taken him from the Rio Grande Valley to network television and independent filmmaking. Along the way, he earned a Primetime Emmy Award for his editing work on The Amazing Race.
After graduating from EHS, Escobar continued his education and professional training at UTPA, now The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He also gained valuable hands-on experience in filmmaking, screenwriting, production management, budgeting, and creative development.
His work in television and film includes editing programs, developing scripts, producing creative projects, managing production budgets and schedules, and working with cast and crew to bring stories to life.
While his career has taken him far from Edinburg, Escobar said the lessons he learned at ECISD continue to influence his work.
“What I remember most about my ECISD experience is the strong sense of community and encouragement,” Escobar said. “Growing up in Edinburg, I was surrounded by classmates, teachers, and staff who believed in students and pushed us to work hard, pursue our goals, and take pride in where we came from.”
Two educators who made a lasting impact on Escobar were Jonah Gray and Susan Smith. He said they saw potential in their students and encouraged them to think creatively and believe in what they could accomplish.
“Their support and confidence in me stayed with me long after graduation,” Escobar said.
Escobar believes those early lessons helped prepare him for the demands of television and film, where deadlines, teamwork, preparation, and attention to detail are essential.
For today's ECISD students, his message is simple: Never underestimate where you come from or what you can achieve.
“Take advantage of the teachers, programs, and opportunities available to you at ECISD,” Escobar said. “Ask questions, work hard, and do not be afraid to pursue a path that feels different or ambitious.”
Escobar's own story is an example of that advice. He started in Edinburg, built his skills through education and experience, and went on to work in network television and earn one of the industry's highest honors.
“Your starting point does not define your limits,” he said.
The lessons Escobar learned at ECISD continue to guide him today. Showing up, meeting deadlines, working with others, and taking responsibility for the quality of his work became important skills throughout his career.
Those lessons reflect the spirit of Achieve. Contribute. Excel. ACE it. Escobar achieved his goals through education and hard work, continues to contribute to the television and film industries, and has excelled at the highest levels of his profession.
No matter where his career takes him, Escobar remains proud of his Edinburg roots and the community that helped shape his journey.
