Video-Conferencing for Educators and Students

Video-conferencing applications allow educators to host online meetings with video, audio, and screen sharing features.  Educators can collaborate, share their computer screens with participants, and share files.  Below is an overview of different video conference applications and expectations for teachers and students in ECISD. Be advised the information on this webpage may be updated periodically as needed.
 
Teacher Expectations for Video-Conferencing Class Meetings
  • Create your video-conferencing classroom instructions and management plan, rules, and expectations. This should be posted and communicated to students in Google Classroom and/or via email and reviewed with all students.  See student expectations below. 
  • Be reasonable with your expectations, schedules, and duration of video-conferencing lessons. Be flexible with your deadlines.
  • Communicate to your department head and/or supervisor that you will be hosting video-conferencing sessions with students in your classes.  Send your department head an invite to your video-conferencing sessions.
  • Instruct students to immediately report any inappropriate activity that may occur to you and/or their parents.
  • One to one video-conferencing sessions between students and teachers are not allowed.  
    • Exceptions:
      • Occupational, Speech, Physical Therapy, etc. may require one to one teacher-student video-conferencing. 
      • Designated staff must have parental consent and supervisor approval in writing via email prior to scheduling one to one video-conferencing sessions between a teacher and a student.
  • Be seated in a chair in a common area of your home when participating in a video conference.
    • No bed or bedroom settings are allowed in the background.
  • Wear proper school attire.
 
Student Expectations
  • All regular classroom expectations for behavior and rules apply in video-conferencing virtual classrooms.
  • Be on time to the video-conferencing class.
  • Be a positive participant.
  • Be respectful to others in attendance.
  • Be seated in a chair in a common area of your home when participating in a video conference.
    • No bed or bedroom settings are allowed in the background.
  • Wear proper school attire.
  • Mute your microphone when you are not speaking to minimize background noise.
 
 
Google Meet Logo
Google Meet
Google Meet is a part of the ECISD Google platform.  Google Meet allows video and audio sharing, chat, and screen sharing video sharing features. Only users with an ECISD Google account are able to connect using the ECISD Google Meet app.
  • Principals and Central Administration Departments are using Google Meet to host staff, department, and grade level meetings with their staff.
  • Teachers are staying connected with colleagues and sharing teaching strategies and ideas. 
  • Teachers are using Google Meet to host a video-conference class with students.
 
Microsoft Teams Logo
Microsoft Office 365 Teams
MS Office 365 Teams is a part of the ECISD Microsoft Office 365 platform. Teams allows video and audio sharing, chat, and screen sharing video sharing features. Only users with an ECISD MS Office 365 account are able to connect using the ECISD Teams app.
 
Teams was developed by Microsoft using features in Skype and allows you to 'call' and connect users in the Edinburg CISD network using the staff search features in the app.
  • Principals are using Teams to host department and grade level meetings with their staff. 
  • Teachers are staying connected with colleagues and sharing teaching strategies and ideas.   
 
GoToMeeting and GoToWebinar
The District uses GoToWebinar to host live online professional development for staff.  We can bring together 25-100 participants using GoToWebinar.  
 
Zoom 
Zoom is a video-conference software that allows users to share audio, video, and computer screens. Zoom has security and privacy vulnerabilities and must not be used as a video-conferencing tool for school-related communication between ECISD teachers and students. 
 
Additional Information for ECISD Educators
ECISD encourages the use of technology as an instructional tool to expand the traditional instructional classroom. The use of technology is also encouraged as it enhances and enriches teaching and learning. As with all educational sites, teachers are expected to ensure that the video-conference is secure and safe. The video-conferencing applications and teacher and student expectations listed above support the Federal Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
