Edinburg CISD is committed to providing professional health services for each student and staff. A Registered Nurse (RN) is assigned to each elementary school campus. An RN and a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) are assigned to each middle school campus. Two RN's are assigned full time to each high school campus. One RN is assigned to provide health services to the Edinburg Alternative Academy as well as the Edinburg Vision Academy and three RN's are assigned as Roving Nurses.  Diana M. US prescription medication 2023-2024 UPDATE:
US prescription medication may be administered at school if the medication is sent in the original, properly labeled container and if the medication is for that particular student. In addition, a signed order from the student's medical care provider and a signed permission from the parent/guardian is required for the administration of ANY medication at school. Forms are located in the Forms section of this department page.
Students may not self-administer medication unless the medication is an asthma inhaler or emergency injectable epinephrine and the proper forms and information from their doctor have been provided to the campus nurse. 
Sample and Over the Counter medication: Sample medication dispensed by your physician may be administered at school if it is accompanied by a written authorization from the doctor as well as written permission from the parent/ guardian. The medication must be in the original, properly labeled container.
Role of the Nurse:
At School:
  • Conduct health screening of vision, hearing, spinal and acanthosis nigricans
  • Provide emergency first aid
  • Administer medication and treatments
  • Evaluate and assess the health needs of students, teachers, and families.
  • Provide health counseling on chronic illnesses, nutrition, disease prevention and positive lifestyles
  • Implement and monitor students' compliance with state immunization laws
  • Develop objectives for the health component of the individual education plan
  • Conduct health-related classroom presentations
  • Evaluate and monitor communicable diseases
  • Provide health resources for students, faculty and staff
In the Home:
  • Serve as liaisons between home and school regarding health concerns
  • Make home visits
  • Record health histories
  • Assess long-term illnesses
  • Implement case management within the school setting
  • Participate in parent-nurse conferences 
  • Provide information and referral to community resources
  • Involved with parent groups
  • Provide activities for health promotions and education
In the Community:
  • Make referrals to appropriate community agencies
  • Participate in professional conferences with community agencies
  • Resources for community agencies and work with community interdisciplinary health teams
  • Report child abuse to appropriate departments or services
Senate Bill 19 has mandated that all school districts in the state of Texas have a School Health Advisory Council. The council is to be made up of a majority of parents of children of the district.   • Vision and Hearing Screening
    Students in kindergarten and grades 1,3,5, and 7 shall be screened for vision and hearing problems annually at any time during the reporting year prior to May 31. 25 TAC 37.23 (c),(d).

    When a student's initial enrollment in the District is also the student's initial enrollment in any Texas school,(i.e. PK and New-to-District) the student shall be screened for possible vision and hearing problems. This screening shall occur prior to completion of the first semester of enrollment or within 120 calendar days of enrollment, whichever is longer. Students may meet this requirement by providing evidence of screening conducted one year prior to enrollment. 25 TAC 37.23 (a)

    The student or minor student's parent, managing conservator, or guardian, may elect to substitute one or more professional examinations for the required screening tests. Health and Safety code 36.005 (a)
  • Spinal Screening

    Grade-based screening is considered an acceptable alternative to age-based screening in a school setting.  The grades, however, must align with the professionally recommended ages so that most children are screened at the appropriate age, or as close to it as reasonably possible.

    In compliance with Health and Safety Code, Chapter 37, all children shall undergo screening for abnormal spinal curvature in accordance with the following schedule:

    • Girls will be screened two times, once at age 10 (or fall semester of grade 5) and again at age 12 (or fall semester of grade 7).
    • Boys will be screened one time at age 13 or 14 (or fall semester of grade 8).

    If the screening indicates the student may have an abnormal spinal curvature, the principal shall send the original of the screening report to the student's parent, managing conservator, or guardian along with a letter advising of the parent's responsibility to select and appropriate health practitioner for an examination. 25 TAC 37.148 (e)
  • Risk Assessment for Type 2 Diabetes
    Students in grades 1, 3, 5, and 7 will undergo a risk assessment for Type 2 Diabetes screening.. This assessment will identify students with Acanthosis Nigricans, which is a skin discoloration or "marker" usually found on the nape of the neck, which may indicate health problems that could lead to Type 2 Diabetes. Students found to have the marker will have their blood pressure and body mass index measured. The risk assessment will be performed at the same time hearing and vision or spinal screening is performed. 
    Parents will be notified of any positive findings. Health and Safety Code, Ch. 95.002 (d), 95.003 (a)
  • Exemption
    A student is exempt from the screening requirements if the tests conflict with the tenets and practices of a recognized church or religious denomination of which the student is an adherent or a member. The student or minor student's parent, managing conservator, or guardian shall submit to the principal on or before the day a of admission an affidavit stating the objections to screening. Health and Safety Code 36.005 (b), 37.002(b), 95.003(b)
