Are Edinburg CISD Police Officers "Real Cops"?

Edinburg C.I.S.D. Police Officers are commissioned as Peace officers by the Board of Trustees of the Edinburg C.I.S.D. The authority to commission peace officers comes from the Texas Education code Section 37.081. The Board of Trustees set the jurisdiction and scope of duties for school district Police Officers.

Edinburg C.I.S.D. Police Officers are authorized to enforce all laws of the State of Texas as well as all County and Municipal Ordinances and may arrest individuals found in violation of those laws. Additionally, officers may write citations for appropriate offenses that are violations of state law including misdemeanor offenses listed in the Education and Traffic codes. These Citations are filed with the appropriate Justice of the Peace or Municipal Judge.

Who do Edinburg C.I.S.D. Police Officers work for?

Edinburg C.I.S.D. Police Officers work for the district that commissions them. Under the Education code of the State of Texas, School District Police Officers are supervised by the Chief of Police of the district. This matter is designated by law under Texas Education Code Section 37.081. The Chief of Police of the school district reports to the District Superintendent or his/her designee.
